Why South Wins

Highway 1 through Big Sur fully reopened on January 14, 2026 after the Regent's Slide closure. This means you can ride the entire classic Pacific Coast Highway from SF to Cambria without detours—a bucket-list experience that was impossible for nearly three years.

The North (Mendocino) is technically superior for aggressive corner-carving—less traffic, tighter turns. But South is the definition of "epic" scenery: Bixby Bridge, dramatic cliffs, McWay Falls. More "holy shit" moments per mile. For a ~3.5 day trip with Yu joining, the South has better lodging variety in your budget and the classic California coast motorcycle experience.

Weather Note: Check forecast closer to March—coastal conditions can vary. Spring typically brings clearer days but verify before departure. Mornings can bring dense fog; it usually burns off by late morning.

The Itinerary

Saturday, March 7: The Escape

SF → Big Sur | 161 miles | ~4 hours riding

Route: Head west through Golden Gate Park to Great Highway, then south on Hwy 1.

Stops

Goal: Get deep into Big Sur before dark. If Yu needs a later flight and you leave midday, still doable—just skip Pescadero detour.

Fuel up in Monterey/Carmel. No gas for ~40-60 miles until Big Sur Village or Gorda, and it's very pricey there.

Lodging Options (Big Sur)

Primary Picks:
Property Price Vibe
Big Sur River Inn $240+ Historic, social. Dangle feet in stream with a beer.
Fernwood Resort $200–300 Rustic redwoods, live music. Great motorcycle vibe.

Ragged Point Inn $250–350 Cliffside rooms at Big Sur's south end.

Note: Luxury spots (Post Ranch, Ventana) run $1k+. The above are the "cool but affordable" options.

Sunday, March 8: The Cliffs & Curves

Big Sur → Cambria | 94 miles | ~2.5 hours riding | The signature day

This is the big day. The stretch from Big Sur to Ragged Point is the most dramatic coastline in the US. Take your time—pull off at turnouts to enjoy views and let faster cars pass.

No gas for ~40 miles south of Big Sur. Tank up before you leave.
Highway 1 winding along Big Sur cliffs
The road hugs every contour of the coastline
Big Sur highway curves along dramatic cliffs
Endless switchbacks with ocean views

Monday, March 9: Wine & Waves

Loop day or partial return | Paso loop: 70 miles, ~2.5 hours

Two main approaches depending on energy and how relaxed you want Tuesday to be:

Option A: Riding Day + Stay in Cambria Again Recommended

Second night in Cambria = no packing up, relaxed evening. Leave early Tuesday for the full return.

Option B: Coastal Chill Day + Stay in Cambria

Option C: Head Partway Back + Stay in Carmel Valley

Ride north partway to shorten Tuesday's ride significantly. Stay in Carmel Valley for easy access to Carmel Valley Rd (G16) the next morning.

Property Price Vibe
Carmel Valley Lodge ~$220 Classic lodge, good value.
Carmel River Inn $150–250 Cottages with fireplaces, private and charming.
Hidden Valley Inn $180–250 Quiet, tucked away.

Option D: Inland Return via Paso → 101 → Santa Cruz

Mix it up with inland variety. Morning in Cambria, then:

Stay in Santa Cruz:

Property Price Vibe
Dream Inn mid-$300s Retro-modern, right on Cowell Beach. Walk to wharf/boardwalk.
Capitola Hotel $250–350 Charming seaside village south of Santa Cruz.

Pro: Makes Tuesday only ~75 miles. Con: Less coastal time on Day 3.

Tuesday, March 10: The Technical Finish

Return to SF | 237 miles | ~5 hours | Must be back by 5 PM

Primary Route (from Cambria): Inland via G16

Skip the traffic slog on Hwy 1 near Monterey. At Carmel, cut inland on Carmel Valley Road (G16)—a stunning, twisty motorcycle road that dumps you near Laguna Seca/Salinas. Hop 101 North to blast back to SF.

Timeline: Leave Cambria by 8 AM → 237 miles, ~5 hours riding + stops → Arrival ~2–3 PM with buffer for your 5 PM deadline.

Alternative Route: Skyline Boulevard via Alice's Restaurant

For one last adrenaline rush and a legendary motorcycle route:

Adds some time but it's a legendary ride if you're craving curves.

Backup Route: Highway 101

If weather turns or you're gassed, take Hwy 101 north from Salinas for a faster inland return (~2 hours to SF). Not scenic but efficient.

Optional Stops on Return (Hwy 1)

Traffic Note: Account for traffic as you re-enter the Bay Area. Hwy 1 turns into 19th Ave through the city. Plan to arrive by 3–4 PM to have buffer.

Pre-Trip Checklist

If North Becomes the Play

If you check traffic Saturday morning and it's a parking lot, or conditions change, or you've done Big Sur before and want redwoods over coastline:

Route: SF → Pt ReyesBodega BayJennerGualalaMendocinoFort Bragg

Epic Section: Westport to Leggett is arguably the best technical motorcycle road in California. Very twisty, 25–30 mph average.

Highlights: Muir Woods (parking/shuttle reservations), Point Reyes, quaint seaside towns, towering redwoods as Hwy 1 meets US-101 near Leggett. Can add Avenue of the Giants off 101.

Stays:

Trade-off: More miles to see major sights. Would feel more rushed than the southern loop for a 4-day trip.

Safe riding. Enjoy the reopened road.
